When you think of exercise what kind of feelings do you have? Is it a dread? Something that you think you can't do? I have had clients with all kinds of reason not to exercise. Truth is we all need it. Our body craves it.
When I 1st started losing weight I had a lot of reasons not to..
1. I was embarrassed. I knew I wasn't in very good shape and I didn't want people to see me. Not even my husband.
2. I didn't have time. That sounds reasonable right? I had 6 kids, and worked full time. Where was a going to fit in exercise?
3. I couldn't afford to go to the gym. Even though in reality you can afford what you make a priority.
I knew I needed to start exercising in order to boost my weight loss. Muscle burns more calories so I needed more muscles. I started by walking. I walked while my kids were at practice. Walking is the easiest form of exercise. Then I bought DVDs. I loved watching the biggest loser so that was the workouts I bought. And being honest at first I couldn't complete the whole workout. I had to work up to being able to complete them. I decided some movement was better than none. And you know what? I found out that making the time for myself was awesome. I gradually got stronger and enjoyed working out. I kept walking and increasing distance. Then one day I decided to run as far as I could. I thought I would die. It felt like my lungs would explode. But I kept doing that. Walk then run until I could run further and further at a time. So I decided to sign up for my 1st 5K. The first time I ran the distance of a 5k as I completed that last mile I was saying to myself lots of things that was said to me over the years of being overweight. This was for the kids who made fun of me. It was for the boys who said I would be pretty if I wasn't fat. For all the feelings of not being good enough for not having enough self confidence to do the things I wanted to do. And I will tell you crossing the finish line on my first 5k was very empowering.
So for anyone who is on their weight loss journey, you can exercise. Start out slow. Progress is progress no matter how small. If its walking from one end of house to the other and increasing number of times you do that a day. Make time for yourself. Change your health. It will be worth it.
